DHS Smart Winch
Downhole Surveys Smart (and Accurate) Winch
Smart Winch Overview

A Smart Winch That Won’t Let You Down! The careful selection of a high torque 12 Volt motor and worm drive gearbox ratios provides the Smart Winch with astonishing power to winch probes in and out of drill holes up to 2000m in depth. Hydraulic power packs, pumps or generators are no longer required. Just connect to a car battery and you’re up and winching. Handles are provided for manual handling of the Smart Winch and two forklift slots have been designed into the base plate for easy lifting.
To complete the professional look and finish of the Smart Winch it also comes with a heavy-duty protective case, doubling as a handy workbench in the field! A combination of stainless steel and powder-coated finishes ensures the Smart Winch looks great, even in the harshest of conditions.
Smart Winch Construction
The Smart Winch is a 12 Volt high torque winch mechanically designed for the depth requirements of drill sites, with the capacity to hold up to 2,000m of 1/8”, or 913m of 3/16” cable. It is light enough to be portable, but it also has bolt-down points which allow it to be securely fastened to a vehicle. It is a versatile but powerful winch that maintains a small, compact footprint of just 675mm x 740mm x 430mm. The powder-coated finish on the aluminium side plates protects the winch from the elements.
Cable spooling
The Smart Winch 12V is designed to be accurate. Its cable laying system uses a mechanically-designed helicon shaft that is CNC machined to ensure each layer of cable is precisely laid on the drum.
Slip Rings
Only the best Slip Rings are used on the Smart Winch. They provide reliable, uninterrupted communication between downhole instruments and surface acquisition systems. A two-way mercury Mercotac slip ring is used for single conductor cable, while a 6-way Techtron slip ring is used with 4-conductor cable.
Motor and Controller
With a lifting capacity of 150 Kg, the Smart Winch is powered by an extremely reliable 0.7Kw 12 Volt motor and driven through a 40:1 worm drive gearbox that is small enough to fit inside the winch housing. Its short circuit, transient and overload protection is enclosed in a rugged IP65 control enclosure. A variable speed controller and additional sensitivity circuitry ensure smooth speed control from 1 metre per minute to a maximum drum speed of 35 metres per minute.
Depth and Rate Measuring
Depth and Rate (m/min) are measured by an optical depth encoder and displayed on a programmable LCD monitor. The system is factory calibrated, providing accurate depth and rate measurements. The measuring wheel is machine-grooved and provides continuous cable contact using a spring-loaded pressure wheel combination that tracks along the helicon shaft.
Brake
An operator-controlled Multi-disk brake provides a positive park or stationary position. Additionally, each winch is fitted with an emergency STOP button.
Warranty
Every winch is covered by a 5-year warranty on the frame and one year on all other components.
