25 "Golden" years (1987 - 2012)

In 1987 GeoMEM started to sell Golden Software products. At that time only Surfer (version 3 - DOS) and Grapher (version 1 - DOS) were available, having been released in 1985 and 1986 respectively.

GeoMEM had evaluated these products to supplement its own geological software applications. The evaluation showed that both products had short learning curves and were providing useful results from real data very quickly. This decided the issue and both were added to the GeoMEM product range shortly after the initial evaluation.

In addition, through the late 1980s until 1992, GeoMEM used both Surfer and Grapher as external data processing and visualisation "add-ons" for its own DOS based core logging (Drillog) and grain size analysis (SivPro) software.

GeoMEM was (and is) an enthusiastic supporter of the Golden Software products as they evolved and the new applications that were introduced over the years.
In 1990 MapViewer (mapping application), Goldens' first Windows program was launched, followed by Didger (digitising) in 1996, Strater (borehole logging) in 2004 and Voxler (Volume/3D visualisation) in 2006.
All made use of the latest developments in operating systems, software development tools and, of course, Golden Softwares many years of experience in producing first class, graphics based, data processing and visualisation software.

Over the 25 years association with Golden Software, GeoMEM has supplied its software to almost all of the Universities in the UK and Ireland (as well as other European countries), to most UK government research organisations, ranging from fisheries to archaeological and geological, as well as a very large number of industry users from individuals to multi-nationals covering disciplines such as: Nuclear power, Mining/quarrying; Exploration; Environmental; Electronics; Physics; Archaeology; Biology; Botany and Medical amongst many others.

Surfer has consistently been the most popular of the Golden Software range, having been provided to customers for projects ranging from microscopic mapping of impurities on silicon chips up to world wide mapping and including:

  • Quarry planning - production of 3D images of extraction life for planning departments
  • Design of golf courses
  • Mapping archaeological sites with sample locations, and layer by layer views as the excavation progresses
  • Mapping of sea floor before, during and after dredging operations
  • Mapping fish movements and shoal density related to ocean factors (currents, chemistry, temperature, etc.)
  • Production of geological maps and sections
  • Geochemical maps
  • Road design ("cut and fill")
  • "Mapping" electrical potential on concrete bridge supports to detect early signs of failure
  • Freshwater research (rivers and lakes): Chemistry, flow, populations
  • Contaminant mapping of old industrial sites
  • and many more....

Applications for the software have been diverse and it is always of great interest to GeoMEM to see how the software is being used and the results obtained by our customers.

GeoMEMs familiarity with the software through use in its own products led to the provision of training courses and front line support for Golden Software products. These services are very much appreciated by UK and Irish customers who are looking for "local" support for their software investment.

Over the past 25 years Golden Software have proved to be a consistently reliable designer and "manufacturer" of high quality, scientific software at very reasonable prices. In addition, they provide support that is second to none coupled with a good upgrade policy on all products.
